Housed in the restored Fléchet factory, this workshop-museum is dedicated to the history and craftsmanship of hat-making and felt production. Once a centre of luxury felt manufacturing, the site preserves the specialised savoir-faire that defined the region’s industry.
The permanent Fashion Gallery displays over 400 hats and headpieces spanning the Middle Ages to contemporary haute couture, including works by Jean Paul Gaultier, Yves Saint Laurent, Hermès and Paco Rabanne. The museum also holds the Celebrity & Provenance collection, featuring hats worn by figures such as Marie Curie, Grace Kelly and Winston Churchill.
Every two years, the museum hosts the International Hat’s Art Competition, an avant-garde global contest that treats the hat as a sculptural art form inspired by painting and fine art.

At the Museum of Costume and Fashioin, Pitti Palace, this landmark exhibition is the first major museum show devoted entirely to the history and artistry of the hat from the late 19th century to the present day. Featuring more than 340 pieces drawn from the museum’s archives and international loans, it elevates millinery from accessory to art object.
The exhibition includes works by Christian Dior, Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Givenchy, Prada and Philip Treacy, with a curatorial focus on the evolution of materials, silhouette and technique across the 20th and 21st centuries.

Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style

Founded by Dr Kirill Babaev, this museum houses over 400 traditional headdresses collected during extensive global travel. The collection is organised across five themed halls representing different continents, offering a cultural journey through headwear traditions.
Highlights range from antique jewelled crowns and ceremonial masks to wedding bonnets and regional dress. Visitors are encouraged to engage with the collection through try-on experiences and workshops exploring traditional hat-making techniques.

Hat Works: Museum of Hatting

Located in the restored Victorian Wellington Mill, Stockport, Hat Works is the UK’s only museum dedicated to the hatting industry. It celebrates Stockport’s history as a global centre of felt hat production.
The Gallery of Hats displays over 400 examples from around the world, while the preserved factory floor demonstrates 19th-century felt-making machinery in operation. The museum also hosts contemporary exhibitions and millinery workshops.

Victoria and Albert Museum – Fashion & Textiles Collection

Located in London, the Victoria and Albert Museum houses one of the world’s most significant dress collections. Located in Montappone, Italy, and dedicated to the straw hat-making traditions of the Marche region, this museum documents the full production process, from harvesting wheat stems to plaiting, sewing and finishing.
The collection includes historic tools, machinery, wooden blocks and archival photographs, as well as notable pieces such as the straw hat worn by Italian filmmaker Federico Fellini. The museum highlights the transformation of rural craft into a defining element of Italian design excellence.

Spanning nearly 2,000 square metres, the JEFFSUN Hats Museum in Chongchuan District, Nantong, China, showcases approximately 6,000 pieces of headwear, hat boxes and accessories from around the world. The collection ranges from ancient imperial artefacts to contemporary designer hats.
Highlights include rare Chinese ceremonial crowns, traditional international headwear and modern competition pieces. The museum also hosts events such as the China International Hat Design Competition, bridging historical craftsmanship with contemporary creativity.
