Hat Block of the Week Vintage Pillbox

Some blocks reveal their beauty immediately — others reward a closer look. This vintage pillbox-style block belongs firmly in the latter category. With its calm, understated front and intricate pleated detail at the back, it’s a shape that feels thoughtful, elegant, and quietly clever. The maker of this block is unknown, but its history is written into the surface.

When it came to me, it showed the marks of a long working life — dents, scratches, and pin wear — and has since been carefully restored so it can be used once again. Although it’s still new to my collection in terms of studio time, the possibilities are already clear. Lighter materials will allow the pleats and indents to remain the focus, letting the detail do the work.
