Hat Block Library

Hat Block Library

A working library of rare, vintage and contemporary hat blocks, open seasonally to milliners from April to September.

The Millinery Retreat is home to an extraordinary collection of hat blocks gathered over more than fifteen years. Here, creativity isn’t limited by the tools you own, but expanded by the shapes you discover.

This is my private working collection - each block chosen for its shape, history and potential. Every piece has a story, a curve and a character. Together they form a carefully curated library that sits at the heart of The Millinery Retreat.

What began as a practical collection of blocks gradually became something of an obsession. Over the years I have searched far and wide for unusual, beautiful and inspiring shapes, always with the dream of one day sharing them with other milliners.

These blocks are not hidden away on shelves. They are here to be explored, used and brought to life through new creations.

A Playground for the Imagination

By joining a Hat Block Library retreat you are given the chance to explore a wide range of forms – vintage, rare, one-of-a-kind shapes, alongside all the essential silhouettes.

The library allows you to move from one idea to the next, unhindered.

Often the right shape is the thing that unlocks the design.

Your next masterpiece could be waiting inside a shape you haven’t met yet.

The Experience

Located at Charlies Creek Farm in the Macedon Ranges, the library sits within a dedicated space built specifically for making and sharing.

This is not a structured class - it is pure access.

It’s a warm, welcoming environment designed for you to get completely absorbed in the process, working at your own pace, in your own way.

With on-site accommodation available, you can step away from the everyday. Immerse yourself in your work, connecting with others, or simply enjoying the space to think and create.

Who is it for

The Hat Block Library welcomes milliners at different stages of their practice.

  • Independent milliners looking to push their creative boundaries.
  • Experienced makers needing specific, rare silhouettes.
  • Students ready to explore beyond the basics.
  • Designers developing or refining a new collection.

There’s no expectation to arrive knowing exactly what you’re doing - that’s part of the process.

How it Works

The Library runs seasonally from April to September. The process is simple:

  • Book your session, choosing to stay on-site or join as a day guest.
  • Bring your materials.
  • Choose your blocks (often the hardest part).
  • Work at your own pace in a calm, focused environment.

This is a self-guided experience, with support available throughout the day if needed.

A Quiet Invitation

If you’ve ever wanted to try a shape but didn’t have the block, this is your opportunity to explore what’s possible.

No pressure, no expectations - just the freedom to make.

A note on the collection

The Hat Block Library is a carefully curated and much-valued collection, built over many years. We ask those attending to respect the integrity of the forms and not copy or reproduce them.

“The millinery retreat experience is incredible and completely unique. You will not find hat blocks of this calibre anywhere else. The hospitality is so warm and welcoming and the accommodation is sheer luxury. Once you try the retreat you will want to return over and over again - or you will never want to leave.”

“A brilliant experience from start to finish. Possum is such a supportive tutor and goes out of her way to pitch things at the learner’s level. The studio and accommodation are gorgeous, the location spectacular and the food delicious. The Millinery Retreat boasts one of the most extensive hat block libraries in the world and it’s a delight to behold. I cannot wait to go back.

“From beginning to end, every moment was a joy. We were welcomed warmly into this beautiful home with stunning views and enjoyed Possum and David’s hospitality. It would have been a lovely holiday even without the millinery - however, as a milliner, the experience was amazing. So many blocks to choose from, everything thoughtfully supplied and wonderful camaraderie with the other guests. Thank you for a wonderful weekend.”
